Afterworlds

The Afterworlds on a North Melbourne train platform

Bought from Megalong Books in Leura, NSW

Since hearing of its impending release all the way back in April at PTALive, I have been eagerly awaiting Scott Westerfeld’s Afterworlds.  Afterworlds is not just one story, but two – the story of Darcy Patel, a high school graduate who just sold the novel she wrote during NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month, for those not in the know) told alongside the story she wrote, titled Afterworlds.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher
for providing this book in exchange
for an honest review. This did not influence
my review in any way.

I have never really loved the Elementals series. I have enjoyed reading the stories of the Merrick boys and Hunter, and I felt this series had a lot of potential to be MORE than what it was, but I never fell in love with it. And if it ever lived up to the potential, I didn’t want to miss that because I felt the Merrick boys were extremely well developed characters and I really liked the Elemental storyline. In this last book, I was looking forward to an epic showdown, lots of action, stakes high. I expected it to maybe come around full circle and while a happy ever after wasn’t realistic or necessary, I still wanted a satisfying ending.

Thank you to the author for providing this book in exchange for an honest review. This did not influence my review in any way.

First things first, the cover pictured above is a draft cover and has since been updated. Being a draft copy of an indie author, I slugged through quite a bit of poor spelling and grammar to get to what lay underneath. This is to be expected and I can only assume that since there is a finished copy, all those little things will be cleared up. I tried hard not to dwell on it too much but I’m a bit of a stickler for things like that!

So what’s it about? Champions: at fire’s end is the first book in a series following 17 year old best friends April and Kyle who live in the fictional town of Caria. They go to their local high school, Kyle swims on the swim team, they seem like average teenagers. But they’re not. They have been chosen to settle the score for two immortal factions who had been at war for eternity. Bestowed with control over fire and water, April and Kyle must seek out the remaining two champions for the ultimate battle. And the immortals are getting restless. The fight is on.

Series Binge Read (1): Fallen Series

series binge read

My first Series Binge Read was the Fallen series by Lauren Kate and took place between August 25th and September 3rd. There are five books – four full length novels and one small novella that fits between books three and four.

Disclaimer – this post includes spoilers but I have at least tried to contain my rage.

So why Fallen?
I read the first three books around four – five years ago when I was 15. It had come just after Twilight and it was during a time when I would read absolutely anything. Scratch that, because I still do that. But I was never as critical as I am now and would often read books, love them and then move on to the next one. I had rated Fallen, Torment and Passion all four stars. I thought it was time I finally finished off the series so I bought the books I didn’t own and had no reason to believe I wouldn’t enjoy these books as much as I did when I was 15.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Rejoice! I have made it to the end. This series is over, completed, and resigned to sit on my shelves for the rest of its life because I have a problem. But that’s a story for another day. I know after the last week everyone is dying to know what I thought of how the series ended…

Review:
I’m making good progress through this series. On to book three already and looking like I will officially be done with this saga/sequence/whatever in the next couple of days. Thank goodness. I know what you’re thinking, I could have stopped anytime. But let’s face it, that’s just not me. I will read bad books just to be reading something, no matter how angry I get at characters (authors generally spare most of my wrath, maybe unfairly).

Review:
Crescendo is the sequel to Hush, Hush, the story of the infuriating Nora and her fallen angel lover boy Patch. Right from the start there was a lot about this novel that irked me. They may seem like little things, but they add up to the reading experience of the book as a whole. I’m going to remember those little things. Well, most of them, hopefully.
